Bill was born November 27, 1943, in Brownwood, TX, to William Harold Simmons and Helen Loraine (Smith) Simmons. From the very beginning, Bill’s life was filled with warmth, humor, heart, and music – qualities that never left him. At the age of 19, he had the good fortune to meet Sue Ann Smock, and the even better sense to marry her on August 16, 1963, at South Park Church of Christ in Beaumont, TX. They went on to spend nearly 63 wonderful years together.
After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Harding University in 1969, Bill and Sue spent their early years in Searcy, AR and Portales, NM. Bill spent his time at Eastern New Mexico University getting his master’s degree in music while also beginning his career as a high school choral director at Portales High School. Here began some of the happiest and fulfilling years as he shaped and molded the love of music in his students. Bill didn’t just teach music; he poured himself into his students. Those students searched for him over the years, and they continued to share their lives with him. After leaving New Mexico, he was blessed to become the choral director at his high school alma mater, South Park High School in Beaumont, TX where he was affectionately known as “Music Man”. He had a rare gift for seeing potential in young people and an even rarer gift for inspiring them to use it. As one former student put it, he would "turn that Greenie choir into a UIL SWEEPSTAKES FORCE” and he did, repeatedly, with a smile and many groan-inducing puns and jokes.
Bill had a beautiful singing voice, but he also loved to laugh. He appreciated a well-timed punchline, trusted implicitly in the utility and quality of "As Seen on TV" products, and held unapologetic opinions about the greatness of liver and onions. On this last point, his family deeply questioned his judgment. He also believed implicitly in the restorative power of Whataburger milkshakes, for which, as his family can attest, there is incontrovertible evidence.
His faith was foundation and he worked tirelessly for “hard fought halleluiah” relationship with his Savior. He and Sue Ann were long-time members of South Main Church of Christ in Weatherford, TX. Next to his relationship with Christ, his children and grandchildren were the light of his life, they were his joy, pride and purpose. He cheered them on, laughed with them, and loved them fiercely.
Bill’s life was a song, full of faith, laughter and love, while his voice may be quiet here, the music he shared and the love he gave will continue in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His family will spend the rest of their lives quoting him, laughing at his jokes, and forever cherishing Whataburger milkshakes (but not reconsidering liver and onions).
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, two great grandchildren, and his beloved service dog, Prince, who no doubt met him at the gate with tail wagging. He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann, two children, Mary Helen McDow (Pete) and Kyle Simmons (Faith), brother Joe Simmons (Annnie Jo), as well as five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and a lifetime of friends.
