Leslie Wayne Melnar
A Man of His Word • A Life Lived Fully Outdoors • A Heart That Never Said “Step”
Leslie Wayne Melnar lived a life deeply rooted in the land, in loyalty, and in love. He was an avid outdoorsman whose passion for the natural world shaped the rhythm of his days — from the quiet of a deer blind in the early morning to the pull of a line on still water. He hunted whitetail, axis, and mule deer, and could spend hours on the water in pursuit of crappie, catfish, striper, and bass. He was a licensed trapper who understood and respected the ways of the wild.
The Camp House at Comfort
Every hunting season found Leslie in Comfort, Texas, gathered at the family camp house with his uncles and cousins. It was a small place — but don’t let that fool you. That little camp house held everything needed for a gourmet meal, walls lined with photographs of first kills and the bragging rights that came with them, and a tradition of storytelling that could fill a book. Oh, the stories they would tell. Summers, too, belonged to the outdoors — Leslie and his family spent them camping, building a lifetime of memories under open skies.
A Life of Hard Work and True Friendship
Leslie spent most of his working life at the steel mill, where he forged not only steel but lasting friendships. In 2010, he moved to Stephenville to help put in a new steel mill, bringing along one of his closest friends, Robert Green — known to everyone who loved him as “Boo-Boo.” Together, they had that plant up and running in no time. The bonds Leslie built at work were the kind that lasted a building a lifetime of memories under open skies.
His Sweetheart and His Family
In October 2011, Leslie met Tamala — and from that moment, everything changed. He proposed on Valentine’s Day 2012. Tamala, protective of her heart and her family, was hesitant at first. But by March, everyone had met Leslie, and by April 5, 2012, they were married. He gained two sons, Chad and Nathan, and eventually three granddaughters and a grandson. He never once said “step.” They were his children, full stop, and he took that on with his whole chest. When he asked Tamala to marry him, he made her a promise: “If you’ll marry me, you’ll never have another worry in the world.” He kept that promise every single day. He loved his sweetheart with everything he had, and there was nothing in this world he would not do for her. Among his most treasured gifts to his granddaughters: their first set of pearl earrings, a necklace, and a bracelet. They have worn them at every special occasion since the day they received them.
The Measure of a Man
Leslie was a strong man — not just in body, but in character. He said what he meant, and he meant what he said. He did a great deal of good for people that was never seen and never known, because he did it for the right reason, not for recognition. His smile could light up a room, and it was genuine every single time.
The Water He Loved
In his final four years, Leslie striper fished twice a month. His buddy Shaun had the boat and did whatever it took to get Leslie out on the water. There is no better gift than that — a friend who shows up and makes it possible. Leslie knew how to be still on the water, how to wait, and how to be grateful for every line cast.
You will be missed every minute of every day.
A man of his word. A man of the land. A man who never said step.
