Donita Lee "Nita" Lowrey, 69, passed away Friday June 12, 2026 at her home in Azle.
Nita was born January 19, 1957 in Paris; daughter of TJ Lowrey and Nancy (Merritt) Lowrey.
Nita was a graduate of McKinney High School. She would go on to receive her Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of North Texas. This would lead her into her career as an educator.
She proudly and bravely served her country in the United States Navy.
She was a extremely kind person, with a love for her family. She will affectionately be remembered as a "hugger" and for always ending a visit with a heartfelt "I love you."
Nita loved animals, especially cats. She was also a passionate advocate for endangered species. In fact, when animals were involved, that kind, sweet disposition could easily get "riled up."
She was a collector of elephants, especially ones that had their trunks raised. She always said "when they hold their trunks up, it means they're happy."
She is the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sonya; brother, Joseph; and stepbrother, David Lowrey.
Survivors include several cousins; brother-in-law, Jeff Zilm; stepsister, Ann Cassidy; and stepbrother, Robert Lowrey.
